Gum Disease : The Dangers, Signs, and Prevention

gum disease

When you are a child, you are told many nuggets by your elders.  Some are rooted in truth and are meant to keep kids safe, some are fables or folklore, and some pieces of advice are just old science.  The warnings of your childhood dentist, parents, and toothpaste commercials concerning brushing and gum disease, however, are not only wise and helpful, but imperative and if not heeded, dangerous.

Gum disease, which is also known as periodontal disease, initially affects the soft tissue inside the mouth, also known as the gums.  It is a very serious infection that will travel to the bone if left untreated.  Periodontitis is the worsening form of periodontal disease.  The deterioration of the jawbone is harmful in several ways.  If the bone deteriorates enough, teeth will become displaced, and will fall out.  When losing teeth, a lot of times an individual will not receive the nutrients they need, and overall nutrition and health suffer.  Again, untreated, gum disease could prove to be catastrophic.  The risk of heart disease increases greatly and there are even significant links between periodontitis and oral cancer.

Grosso Family Dentistry is a leading dental practice in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease) and peridontitis.  Dr. Frank Grosso has decades of experience in identifying gum disease and coming up with a strategic plan to improve the health of these Frederick and Carroll County patients.  Dr. Katie Grosso is a brilliant dentist in Eldersburg and Sykesville who stresses the importance of good soft tissue health.

So what are the signs of gum disease?  Some of the most prevalent symptoms or signs of periodontal disease are bad breath or redness, bleeding, and swelling in the gums.  This is why regular check-ups are so important, and you should have an ongoing communication channel with your dentist.  Preventive dentistry is vital in heading off these diseases at the pass.  Loose teeth may also be a sign that the soft tissue is damaged.  A lot of times, inflammation where the gums meet the teeth will be one of the first signs of trouble.  Grosso Family Dentistry is a leading center for treating and preventing gum disease in Northern Maryland.

When growing up, most school children are told to brush three times per day, after each meal.  Most dentists recommend brushing at least twice per day.  This is step one in trying to prevent gum disease.  People should also floss once per day, probably in the evening after finishing all meals.  Keeping the area clean in around the teeth and gums is vital in retaining oral health.  An electric toothbrush may be a good option, as sometimes they can clean more efficiently.  It is also important to switch toothbrushes every couple of months if you are using a manual brush.  The bristles get worn out.  Also, acids and enzymes attack and break down teeth, so a balanced diet can be extremely helpful.  Starches and sugars that are found in fruits and vegetables help protect against these acids, so eating these healthy foods have many benefits in addition to nutrition.  Another way to clean the mouth is by using an antimicrobial mouthwash.  Rinsing with mouthwash can be done twice a day.  Of course, not being a smoker is the first and most simple preventative measure.

Be on the lookout for gingivitis, which is the swelling or inflammation of the gums.  Again, this may be the first symptom that gum disease is developing.  Katie and Frank Grosso are two of the most accomplished dental professionals in Frederick and Carroll Counties.  They frequently examine patients and consult with them on preventing and treating gum disease.  Setting up an appointment with Grosso Family Dentistry is the first step towards maintaining and improving oral health.
